Unique Pieces at Home and Cottage Expo

Bringing a unique piece of nature inside has been a popular trend in recent years, in the form of live edge furniture.

Some of those unique pieces were on display by vendors at the Owen Sound Home and Cottage Expo at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre on the weekend.

“We have always done wood furniture and it is the beauty of natural wood that people love,” said Wayne Datema, owner of Country Charm Mennonite Furniture. “Here you are getting something that is organic and it is really driving the market right now.”

Datema said there is a real push in society towards salvaging items and making them useful again, and that is essentially what is being done with the live edge pieces.

“It is eco-friendly because of that,” said Datema. “There is no glue in them because you have got a true slab, and they are really beautiful pieces.”

Country Charm Mennonite Furniture in Streetsville Specializes in Hand-crafted and Live Edge Pieces

There’s a popular saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words” –in other words, every photo tells a unique story at a glance. The same can be said for every piece of handcrafted furniture at the new Country Charm Mennonite Furniture store in Streetsville. The intriguing shop is filled with one-of-a-kind solid wood furniture pieces including live edge, reclaimed barn board and tables with wood burls or markings left intact to create a dramatic design statement.

“I am in love with unique pieces,” says Wayne Datema, owner of Country Charm Mennonite Furniture which celebrated the GrandOpening of their Streetsville location at 220 Queen Street South on April 6th. “Every piece of our furniture tells a story. It is made from solid wood, hand crafted by Mennonite or Amish artisans, and built to last a lifetime.”

The Science of Building

The primary design feature is the shiplap that clads nearly every wall in the house. Painted in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White, the textural quality of the shiplap adds a fine layer of detail within the all-white palette and was the inspiration for the design elements throughout the rest of the house. The live-edge walnut table from Country Charm, with the reclaimed walnut detail on the ceiling above, helps to anchor and define the dining area in the open-concept space.

Streetsville Getting Country Charm

Renovations are underway and in early April a new furniture shop will open in the heart of Streetsville. The landscape in the Village will see some changes as Ladners Clothier’s moves their location to the upper level in the same building and Country Charm moves in to 220 Queen Street South (the location Ladner’s Clothier’s has occupied for the past few decades).

Country Charm Furniture produces the highest quality bedroom, living room, dining room, home office, and occasional furniture and accessories, hand-crafted from solid wood by Amish and Mennonite craftsmen.

Nature’s Finest

At the top of a rural lane just south of the lights at Rockford, a century old barn houses a showroom brimming with quality, solid wood furniture and country and modern-inspired home décor, lighting and accessories. Country Charm has been a go-to destination for handcrafted wood furniture since 1996, when they renovated a historic shed on the property and opened their doors to the public. Quick growth required more square footage and the retail area was moved into the renovated barn in 1999. Recently, they’ve expanded again and returned to their roots with the reopening of the original building, which is now home to a specialized display of one-of-a-kind live-edge pieces.
